Garage door springs for your home

Springs counterbalance the weight of your door so it lifts smoothly by hand or by opener. When one breaks, the door gets heavy fast.

How pickup worksAsk a question

Torsion springs

Mounted on a shaft above the door. As the door closes, the springs wind up; as it opens, they unwind and turn the cable drums that lift the door.

Extension springs

Found along each upper track. They stretch as the door closes and pull as it opens. They should always have a safety cable running through them.

Safety first: garage door springs hold a lot of stored energy. Torsion springs in particular can cause serious injury if they are wound or unwound without the right tools and know-how. If you are not confident doing the job safely, have a qualified installer fit the parts you pick up.

Spring questions

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?

Common signs are a visible gap in a torsion spring coil, a loud bang from the garage, a door that feels very heavy, or an opener that strains and can't lift the door.

Should I replace both springs?

On doors with two springs, many owners replace both at once because they usually have similar wear.

Torsion or extension: which do I have?

Torsion springs sit on a metal shaft above the door opening. Extension springs run alongside the horizontal tracks on each side.
