Garage door openers (motors)

The opener is the motor that moves your door. If yours is noisy, unreliable or simply worn out, pick up a replacement at the kiosk.

How pickup worksAsk a question

Chain drive

A metal chain pulls the door along the rail. A long-standing, straightforward design.

Belt drive

A reinforced belt in place of the chain, generally quieter. Popular when there are rooms above or beside the garage.

Wall-mount

Mounts beside the door and turns the torsion shaft directly, freeing up the ceiling.

Check the door first: disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy or won't stay halfway open, the springs need attention before any opener.

Opener questions

What kinds of garage door openers are there?

Common home openers are chain drive, belt drive (often quieter), screw drive and wall-mounted (jackshaft) units.

Will a new opener fix a door that's hard to lift?

No. An opener is not meant to lift a door with broken springs or cables. Check the springs and cables first.

What details should I note about my current opener?

The brand and model on the motor unit, the drive type, and the height of your door.
